Xiaomi wins three consecutive patent battles in Europe

On July 10, according to a report by the renowned international intellectual property media outlet IPFray, the Hamburg Local Division of the Unified Patent Court (UPC) ruled in case no. ACT_19746/2024 that Xiaomi did not infringe upon the patent EP2642632 ("Wireless Power Receiver and Method for Manufacturing the Same") asserted by Nera. It’s reported that this patent was originally filed by LG Electronics and now it is held by Nera, a patent entity under Atlantic IP.

This is Xiaomi’s third consecutive victory in lawsuits filed against it by Nera:

The first time: On May 6, 2025, the Düsseldorf Regional Court held a hearing on the EP2946706 patent case. The judge expressed "serious doubts" about the validity of the patent, and the infringement trial was officially suspended.

The second time: In the Munich Regional Court case no. 21 O 4817/24, the infringement trial was postponed after the German Federal Patent Court issued a preliminary negative opinion on the patent invalidity on the eve of the trial at the Munich District Court.

The third time: In this latest UPC case, the authorized claims were deemed invalid. Although Nera submitted multiple auxiliary requests for claim amendments, only the second request was approved, while the others failed. The court ultimately ruled that Xiaomi did not infringe the amended claims.

As a key role in the European market, Xiaomi is often targeted by patent holders in German courts or the UPC. Rare public reports of related litigation make it an impression of a "low-profile", but it reflects Xiaomi’s pragmatic strategy of prioritizing negotiation—tending to resolve disputes through reasonable discussions. However, when faced with overreaching or unsubstantiated patent claims, Xiaomi demonstrates a firm attitude in defending its rights rather than passively conceding.
