China’s 2025 patent and utility model numbers for January to May show decrease of 28.04% and 17.79% year-on-year

Recently, the CNIPA released the monthly statistical report on examination and registration of the National Intellectual Property Administration in May 2025. Compared with January to April 2024, the number of invention patents granted in January to April 2025 decreased by 28.04% year-on-year, utility models decreased by 17.79% year-on-year, and designs increased by 2.77%.

 

According to data previously released by CNIPA:

 

Compared with January 2024, the number of invention patents authorized in January 2025 declined by 13.93% year-on-year, utility models declined by 4.99% year-on-year, and designs increased by 10.69% year-on-year.

 

Compared with January-February 2024, the number of invention patents granted from January to February 2025 was down 15.93% from a year earlier, utility models down 2.67% from a year earlier, and designs up 9.34% from a year earlier.

 

Compared with January-March 2024, the number of invention patents granted from January to March 2025 fell by 20.99% year-on-year, utility models fell by 2.73% year-on-year, and designs rose by 10.07%.


Compared with January-April 2024, the number of invention patents granted from January to April 2025 dropped by 26.02% year-on-year, utility models dropped by 11.62% year-on-year, and designs increased by 3.95%


So far, the number of invention patents and utility model authorizations has decreased year-on-year for four consecutive months, and the year-on-year decline rate of invention patent grants has reached the highest rate this year.
