White Paper on the Status of Intellectual Property Protection in China in 2024 (hereinafter referred to as the "White Paper") was officially released recently. The White Paper introduces the progress and achievements of China's IP protection in 2024 from protection effectiveness, system construction, approval and registration, cultural construction, and international cooperation.
A total of 450,000 new first-instance civil cases of intellectual property rights were accepted in courts nationwide, 7,646 cases of intellectual property infringement examination and arrest were accepted by the procuratorate, 37,000 criminal cases of IP infringement and manufacturing and selling of counterfeit goods were filed and investigated by the public security organs, 43,900 illegal cases in trademarks and patents were investigated and handled by the market supervision departments, and 72,000 administrative cases of patent infringement disputes were handled by the intellectual property management departments.
As of the end of 2024, there were 5.689 million valid invention patents in China, a year-on-year increase of 14.0%, 49.777 million valid registered trademarks, a year-on-year growth of 7.9%; 10.6306 million total annual copyright registration, rising 19.13% from a year earlier; and a total of 2,544 geographical indication products recognized. In 2024, 14,839 applications for new varieties of agricultural plants were accepted, up 3.93% from a year ago; 1,338 applications for new varieties of forest and grass plants were accepted; and 29,541 applications for customs protection of IP rights were accepted.
